Ed Roth significance to American Counter Culture started when he was the first to put graphics on t-shirts using car airbrush tools. Rather than following what is considered as good taste by society, Ed Roth created the character "Rat Fink" as the counter-culture answer to Mickey Mouse and made a statement that bad taste was good. Ed's monster shirts were part of the uniform of youth culture who used them to impress their peers and at the same time offend and gross out parents and teachers.
