Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins was a tough old sea dog with a shrewd intellect. For 40 years, Sailor Jerry honed his craft on a canvas of carousing military men in the rough Hotel Street district of Honolulu. A self-taught electrician, poet and all-round tinkerer, he revolutionized modern tattooing and created an artistic legacy that is still felt today.

We make clothing inspired by the artwork and legacy of Norman 'Sailor Jerry' Collins, father of the old-school tattoo and a stubborn sonuvabitch. He built his rep tattooing thousands of soldiers and sailors in the rough Hotel Street district of Honolulu, where men on shore leave came to find women, booze and tattoos.
Norman 'Sailor Jerry' Collins combined the refined techniques of Japanese tattoo masters with the devil-may-care sensibility of men about to embark on dangerous adventures. Some of his tattoos were eerily soulful. Others look death in the face and wink. Still, others represent the spirit of mischief and shenanigans common among military men on leave.
When Sailor Jerry passed away in 1973, he had left specific instructions with his wife about the fate of his tattoo shop and, in turn, his legacy.
According to Mike Malone, Jerry said it was to be offered to each of his three proteges.
