Saxon Atonement

Discovered when excavating a rare, pagan style Anglo-Saxon ‘bed burial’ from the 7th century CE in Trumpington, Cambridge, this is a cast pewter replica of the incredible, elaborate pectoral cross being worn by the young woman interred, representing a scarce example of the transition from paganism to Christianity; King Rædwald of East Anglia, at the time, had an alter to Christ added to his shrine, along with those of his his old pagan gods for divine appeasement. The original cross, also 35mm wide, was hand crafted in solid gold and inlaid with tiny, translucent-thin cut garnets - our pewter version has a semi-precious carnelian agate cabochon at its center. No doubt, the privileged young lady found wearing this felt reassuringly protected for both this life and the next.

Packaging: Presented in a branded Lychgate green velvet pouch with an attached descriptive kraft hang tag. Packaged in a 4-inch square poly bag, sealed with a round Lychgate sticker.
