Marion Mark

This amulet can be found carved on or around ancient hearths, doorways and other thresholds and is called a Marian mark, from the name Mary, referring to the Virgin Mary. It was intended as a divine protection against intrusion by harmful spirits. The incised symbol was a VV, usually with the two capital ’V’s’ intersecting so to appear as a ’W’, and often seen inverted as an ‘M’. This could be viewed as ‘VV’ for Virgo Virginum, (Virgin of Virgins), or’M’ for Mary, (Mother of God). The Marion is one of several protection symbols in common use during the Middle Ages and through to the 19th century, collectively known as apotropaic marks. This pewter pendant has been transcribed from incised graffiti found in old stonework.

Packaging: Presented in a branded Lychgate green velvet pouch with an attached descriptive kraft hang tag. Packaged in a 4-inch square poly bag, sealed with a round Lychgate sticker.
